Cornwall gets the holiday season off to a cracking start.

Tourism businesses say they have been fully booked this May half term.

They reckon lots of people are discovering the Duchy for the first time and there is an increase in overseas visitors.

Hazel Elliot is the managing director at holiday agency Pure Cornwall. She told Pirate FM it is shaping up to be an amazing summer: “We have been fully booked for quite some time, that’s all 141 cottages, houses, apartments right across the whole of the county completely fully booked.

“June was looking a little quieter but with this burst of really nice weather, the bookings are flooding in and July and August have been fully booked for some time. If we can continue with this weather, there’s nowhere else in the world like it is there. Why would you go anywhere else?”

She added that Cornwall’s growing popularity is sustainable: “People are discovering Cornwall. There is definitely a shift this year in people who are coming to Cornwall for the first time and they are maybe coming away from other areas that they may have visited normally like the Lake District or Wales and we have had a big surge in visitors from abroad, particularly Germany. I don’t think it’s a blip, I think it’s going to be a continuous thing for the future.”
