Cusgarne House is a Grade II* Listed farmhouse which was leased by James Watt and his family between 1780-1800. James Watt is one of the most important engineers and scientists in history. His work on the modern steam engine has been said to have kick started the entire industrial revolution. The house was also visited by Winston Graham, author of the Poldark novels when he was conducting research into the Cornish mining industry during the period when James Watt resided at Cusgarne House. One of the principal characters in the Poldark novels was Elizabeth Chynoweth who came from ‘an old house in Cusgarne’.
